Brazilian writer Marcelo Mirisola’s work is a good example of the so called «self-writing narrati... more Brazilian writer Marcelo Mirisola’s work is a good example of the so called «self-writing narrative». His two books O azul do filho morto, from 2002, and Charque, from 2011, show the constant drift between both the autobiographical and the fictional pacts that the author implicitly establishes with his readers. Using theoretical approaches related to autobiography and autofiction, we analyze Mirisola’s narrative, structural and thematic strategies, as well as his identification with both books’ narrators, with whom he shares, at least, his name.

Film director Marcel Camus’ Orfeu negro actualizes Orpheus’ classical myth and transplants it int... more Film director Marcel Camus’ Orfeu negro actualizes Orpheus’ classical myth and transplants it into Rio de Janeiro’s carnival in the 1950’s. Working on the interartistic connections between Virgil’s and Ovid’s narrative poems, on the one side, and the film, on the other, we use Gérard Genette’s theoretical concepts about hypertextuality to study the processes of formal and thematic transposition that lead to consider Orfeu negro as its classical hypotext’s parodie. The diegetic transformation visible in the movie generates amplification in the form of new characters, secondary stories and visual details for the city of Rio that also depict Brazilian customs. Carnival’s presence as a theme and its allegorical meaning will also be studied in relation to an implicit challenge to the establishment and to a more or less effective counterideology, both of which will be analyze using Mijail Bakhtin’s concept of carnivalization.

An important part of the literary works about the Brazilian bandeirante and the Argentinean gauch... more An important part of the literary works about the Brazilian bandeirante and the Argentinean gaucho was written after their lifestyles' extinction. However, two literary myths were generated related to the creation of the modern state and the establishing of their national borders, especially in the XIXth century. The epic view and the supposed democratization of the bandeiras' participants, plus the romantic and Eurocentric characterization of the Argentinean gaucho in the literature, give a very simplistic and folkloric image of their roles as explorers in search of riches and slaves, in the case of the bandeirantes, and their interaction with Indians at the border, in the case of gauchos. This work aims to show the similarities and differences between both processes of literary mystification in the historic context where they are produced, reflecting about the degree of success in the construction of a national identity.

This paper aims to analyze synergic relations among intertextual practices and different cognitiv... more This paper aims to analyze synergic relations among intertextual practices and different cognitive psychology theories applied to literary studies in order to explore a specific case of classical myth Pygmalion’s use: Tanizaki Junichirô’s Chijin no Ai. Starting from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and through the concepts of transtextuality, intertextuality and interfigurality, among others, as well as cognitive stylistics’ theories such as the metaphor, the schema and the integration theories, we show how the myth’s demythification is executed and a new ideological and literary reading of the myth in the sociocultural context of 1920’s Japan is developed. Finally, we enunciate the changing elements in the film adaptation of Tanizaki’s novel 40 years later in Japan.

El uso del Spanglish en la literatura norteamericana es un fenómeno muy relacionado con eventos m... more El uso del Spanglish en la literatura norteamericana es un fenómeno muy relacionado con eventos migratorios hacia Estados Unidos que han provocado una realidad bilingüe que dicha literatura trata de mostrar. El caso de Junot Diaz, autor dominicano-americano afincado en Nueva York, es relativamente reciente puesto que en 2008 se le ha concedido el premio Pulitzer por su primera novela The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. En ella y en su anterior colección de relatos Drown muestra la realidad de la vida en la República Dominicana y de los dominicanos afincados entre Nueva Jersey y
Nueva York tras su aventura migratoria desde los años 70. La literatura de Díaz, aparte de postmodernistas juegos con los narradores y voces en el texto, aunque esencialmente escrita en inglés, hace un uso indiscriminado del Spanglish, especialmente por medio de lo que John M. Lipski llama “la intercalación fluída y frecuente del español y el inglés en una sola conversación u obra literaria (fenómeno conocido como ‘cambio de código’)”; en otras ocasiones también se producen variantes distintas del fenómeno, como la creación de nuevos vocablos a partir de la fusión de una palabra del español y otra del inglés. A pesar de la variedad y riqueza del español empleado por Diaz, existen unos patrones de uso de su particular Spanglish que se repiten en la mayoría de los casos: peculiaridades culturales y sociales inherentes a la isla; relaciones familiares, personales y sexuales; política e historia; y especialmente, cuestiones raciales. Este trabajo trata de analizar dichos usos y los efectos y matices que el autor persigue y/o consigue cuando emplea el español en su literatura.

The recent trend of Dominican migration to the United States echoes previous patterns of Hispanic... more The recent trend of Dominican migration to the United States echoes previous patterns of Hispanic migration but with some characteristic aspects concerning race. As 75 % of this Dominican migrant population is mulatto, their classification as black people in the U.S. has affected the way they see themselves compared to people still living in the Dominican Republic; this classification has also determined the living conditions that they are offered in a racially dualized world such as the US. Junot Diaz, Dominican-American author, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for his first long novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. His literature vividly depicts the life of this community, both in the U.S. and in the Dominican Republic, and his use of a musical and meaningful Spanglish is an implicit denouncement of the racism suffered but also paradoxically practiced by Dominicans. This paper will illuminate these aspects of race and identity in Junot Diaz’s literary work.

El Ise Monogatari japonés y el castellano Libro de Buen Amor suponen sendos hitos importantes en ... more El Ise Monogatari japonés y el castellano Libro de Buen Amor suponen sendos hitos importantes en las literaturas de sus respectivos países por su calidad literaria y por la novedad que suponen en un momento histórico y cultural determinado en el que la lengua escrita no había sido fijada por completo y en el que grandes cambios de formato y estilo literario comenzaban a hacer su aparición. La distancia tanto cronológica como cultural que separa a dichas obras no impide que se puedan establecer ciertos paralelismos entre las mismas, tanto en su estructura como en la temática, que comparten en alto grado. Aún así, la ideología que subyace a la génesis de cada obra, en concreto la visión que se tiene del amor, el sexo y las relaciones personales, parece ser distinta en los dos casos y explica una forma muy diferente de ver la vida por parte de ambas culturas. El objeto de este trabajo consiste en buscar elementos concretos en los dos textos para contrastarlos y llegar a alguna conclusión sobre dichas ideologías.

The Spanish myth of Don Juan has been revisited a number of times in many literatures since its f... more The Spanish myth of Don Juan has been revisited a number of times in many literatures since its first apparition in 1630 in El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de Piedra by Tirso de Molina. In every case, the character-myth is depicted with different features of personality, values and ideology of love. Two of them, the Marqués de Bradomín by Valle-Inclán and Felix de Montemar by José de Espronceda, corresponding to Spanish Modernism and Romanticism respectively, have very peculiar characteristics. On the other hand, in the Japanese literature, the closest literary creation to Don Juan is Ihara Saikaku’s Yonosuke, a compulsive ladies’ man from the Tokugawa’s 17th century. The objective of this article is to analyze and compare the three literary characters focusing specifically in the kind of love they profess to their lovers, using the Triangular Theory of Love, a powerful psychosocial theory by Robert J. Sternberg,

El Lazarillo de Tormes, anónimo y en torno a 1554, supone la inauguración de un género literario ... more El Lazarillo de Tormes, anónimo y en torno a 1554, supone la inauguración de un género literario –el de la picaresca- que habría de tener continuación y epígonos durante al menos un siglo. Elementos del género como la narración aparentemente autobiográfica de un personaje de baja extracción social, el relato cronológico de su vida desde la infancia, la sucesión de distintos amos con evolución de dicho personaje, así como la justificación de una vida sin honor o de un “caso”, más la denuncia o crítica social, nos servirán de base para comparar el clásico castellano con el cuento “A confissão de Leontina” de Lygia Fagundes Telles, publicado inicialmente en 1949. A partir del amplio concepto de transtextualidad –entendido como “tout ce qui le met en relation, manifeste ou secrète, avec d’autre textes” (Genette 1982: 7)- estudiamos las numerosas coincidencias estructurales y temáticas entre ambas obras, ya sean debidas a implícitas cuestiones de tipo taxonómico-genérico, ya estén relacionadas con transformaciones semánticas, las cuales nos permitirán comparar temas y motivos, y su tratamiento por parte de los dos autores.

A partir dos estudos classificatórios do duplo no contexto da teoria dos mundos possíveis de Lubo... more A partir dos estudos classificatórios do duplo no contexto da teoria dos mundos possíveis de Lubomir Doležel, é possível analisar dita figura narrativa em obras literárias contemporâneas de caráter hipertextual: no caso de O sol se põe em São Paulo, do escritor brasileiro Bernardo Carvalho, e Siempre supe que volvería a verte, Aurora Lee, do espanhol Eduardo Lago, suas respectivas personagens sofrem desdobramentos que provêm das próprias transformações a partir dos textos nos quais estão baseados. Por um lado, as figuras emprestadas já supõem duplos daquelas dos hipotextos; por outro, produz-se uma multiplicação dos actantes que tende finalmente à unicidade. A formação narrativa do duplo nesses dois romances e a percepção pelos leitores dessas identidades fragmentadas, também podem ser explicadas com as teorias provenientes da ciência cognitiva aplicada aos estudos literários: as conclusões de Michael Gazzaniga sobre o hemisfério esquerdo do cérebro e a construção fictícia da própria identidade levam a uma concepção do duplo como ruptura da coerência do agente racional imaginado; as metáforas linguísticas do split-self, de George Lakoff, contêm a chave de como o ser humano (e o leitor) conceitualiza seu próprio eu, identificando aspectos inconsistentes de si mesmo como pessoas diferentes; a caracterização ambígua de personagens, apresentada por Jonathan Culpeper como a quebra dos schemata do leitor, prepara este para assumir a aparição do duplo na obra literária.

In Subúrbio, Fernando Bonassi focuses on the lack of communication and solidarity through the story of an elderly couple that degenerates in violence and pedophilia. Finally, in Ninguêm é inocente em São Paulo, Ferréz takes us to the favela world from the inside, denouncing a society that systematically exploits and criminalize the poor.

Jorge Amado and Juan Marsé share a few elements which constitute their respective childhoods, alt... more Jorge Amado and Juan Marsé share a few elements which constitute their respective childhoods, although in distant locations and different historical contexts: the Brazilian Bahia of the 1920’s and the Spanish post-war Barcelona. Both of them show in their novels society’s moral degradation as far as children are concerned. This paper will try to confront Capitães da Areia’s (1937) allegorical and almost mythical structure with the Catalonian microcosm of Si te dicen que caí (1973), focusing on the coincidences between them –sense of orphanhood in their characters, hostility from society, premature sex, violence and death- and studying the various narrative mechanisms used by each author –lineal structure and strong ideological message in Amado versus narrators and narrations’ induced confusions and demythification of post-war topics in Marsé.
